Royal Spectacle: The 1860 Visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada and the United States
Abstract
Montreal's Victoria Bridge, completed in 1859, was officially inaugurated by Albert Edward, the eighteen year-old Prince of Wales (and future King Edward VII), on August 25, 1860. Queen Victoria had been invited to attend the opening of the bridge, but she declined the invitation and instead sent her eldest son. It was the first Royal visit to North America. For several days after the inauguration, the city was filled with balls and demonstrations of pride about the Victoria Bridge, the longest railway bridge in the world and the first to span the St. Lawrence River, and about Montreal's connection with the British Empire. The author describes the festivities that greeted the young Prince's visit whille he toured Canada and the United States.
