Abstract |
Born in Ireland at the end of the eighteenth century, Maurice Cavanah Nowlan was the son of William Nowlan and Catherine Cavanah. He married Agathe Perrault (1787-1871), daughter of Joseph Perrault and Marie-Anne Tavernier (1752-1822), on February 10, 1812, at the parish of Notre-Dame de Montréal. He joined the 100th Regiment of Foot (The Prince Regent's County of Dublin Regiment) as an ensign in 1800 and at the time of his marriage, he was a lieutenant. The Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec's Montreal archives centre has about about thirty love letters written in English by Nowlan to Agathe Perrault, dated between December 1811 when he began courting Agathe, until December 18, 1813, the day before his death, during a British army attack on the American army at Fort Niagara.
