Abstract |
Frances Brooke's Quebec-based 1769 book "The History of Emily Montague" is considered the first novel written in English in Canada. Philippe Aubert de Gaspé fils's 1837 book "L'influence d'un livre" is the first novel written in French in Canada. The author outlines how literary critics have portrayed these two books within both English Canadian and French Quebec literatures.
