Abstract |
A profile of the British merchant Edward Ellice (1783-1863), nicknamed "Bear Ellice" for his "oiliness" in business transactions. A member of, and London agent for, the Montreal-based North West Company, and the owner of the Seigneury of Beauharnois, Ellice was cited by Lord Durham as being one of Lower Canada's progressive land owners. Ellice had tried unsuccessfully to develop the seigneury according to "business methods" and not the time-honoured seigneurial customs.
