An abstract of a paper given at the Canadian Library Association annual conference in 1991, held in Montreal. The author describes the scientific reading material of Elkanah Billings (1820-1876), who in 1846 was hired to be the first paleontologist for the Montreal-based Geological Survey of Canada; Sir John William Dawson (1820-1899), a geologist and Principal of McGill University from 1855 to 1893; and Sir William Edmond Logan (1798-1875), a geologist who was the director of the Geological Survey of Canada from 1842 to 1870.
