Abstract |
The biography of a Congregational minister active in Lower Canadian church affairs in the mid-nineteenth century. Born in England, Henry Wilkes (1805-1886) began his career in Montreal as the minister of the First Congregational Church (Zion Church) on Rue St. Maurice in 1836. In 1842 Wilkes founded the Congregational Theological Institute in Montreal to train Congregational pastors. In November 1846 a new Zion Church was opened on Rue Sainte-Radegonde to accommodate the growing number of believers, thanks to Wilkes' preaching. Wilkes also served as president of the board of examiners for Montreal Protestant schools for twelve years and as the editor of several religious newspapers.
