Overview of the Teaching of Elementary Social Studies and Secondary History within the Anglophone Community of the Province of Quebec: A Report by the History Task Force
|
Abstract |
A critique of the teaching of history in English language elementary and secondary schools in Quebec in the 1990s. The report concludes that history was being taught by teachers who may lack their own adequate historical knowledge and were forced by budgetary constraints to use textual material that was dated. The History Task Force undertook a province-wide survey in June 1998. Targeted specifically at those institutions characterized as "Anglophone," the survey was mailed to 429 schools: 360 public sector elementary and secondary schools, 56 private schools, and 13 government institutions. The return rate was very high, with 297 elementary, 158 secondary, and 107 completed questionnaires returned.
