Les Allemands du Québec : parcours et discours d’une communauté méconnue
|
| Abstract |
The author traces the cultural development and the quest for identity of German Quebecers. He believes that German culture in Quebec, poised between a community strongly anchored in its "Germanness" and the promise symbolized by Canadian society, does not seem able to develop in the direction of a specific community, capable of surviving in the North American context. German immigrants arriving in Quebec in the 1950s expected an English-speaking America, and were caught up in the turmoil of a Quebec undergoing a social and linguistic revolution. There are about 100,000 people in Quebec who are of German ethnic origin. Most live in the Montreal area.
