Broadway North: Musical Theatre in Montreal in the 1920s
|
Abstract |
In the decade following the First World War, Montreal, in theatrical terms, was a northern outpost of Broadway. Almost all the city’s musical theatre entertainment was foreign in origin, arriving mainly from New York City. While the musical attractions sent northwards from Broadway were a popular divertissement for a large proportion of Montrealers from all social classes and linguistic backgrounds, they were abhorred by the province’s clerical and nationalist elites and their supporters who regarded these entertainments as a threat to the survival of traditional French Canadian values and culture.
