Abstract |
A biographical sketch of James John Harpell (1874-1959), who opened a publishing company in Ste-Ann-de-Bellevue, a west island suburb of the City of Montreal, in 1918. The same year, Harpell decided to build a garden city where his employees could live. The publishing company became known as Garden City Press. In 1922 Harpell established the Institute of Industrial Arts to promote adult education and self-study for industrial workers. That same year he organized courses for his employees at Garden City Press and started the Ste-Ann-de-Bellevue study club for adult learners. In 1940 Harpell sold the garden city houses to his employees at a nominal price.
