Raconter la Conquête : Quand le passé change selon les époques
|
Abstract |
A short history of "Conquest novels", fictionalized accounts of the capitulation of New France and the British take-over of the colony. This genre of literature began in 1859-1860 with the serialized publication in English in the Montreal Family Herald of "The Manor House of De Villerai: A Tale of Canada Under the French Dominion", by Montreal-born Anglophone Rosanna Eleanor Leprohon (1829-1879), née Mullins. The novel was published in French in 1861 as "Manoir de Villerai." The author outlines the evolving themes in this genre of literature by Francophone authors from the nineteenth century to the twenty-first century, from blaming France for deserting the colony to the romantic liaisons between French Canadian women and British (actually Irish and Scottish) soldiers (whom the author points out were "des hommes issus de peuples aussi avides d'indépendance... que nous!").
