Abstract |
The textile industry in Magog traces its roots back to the wool factory established by Joseph Atwood in 1834. However, it was not until the creation of the Magog Textile & Print Co. by William Hobbs, the operating and managing director of the company, and others, in 1883 that the textile industry in the Eastern Township village really came into its own. In 1890, the factory came under the control of Andrew Gault’s Dominion Cotton Mills. By 1943, there were 2,300 people employed at the Magog plant. This study also describes unionization of the workers and the strikes at the Magog plant in the 1930s and 1940s.
