Abstract |
The first Winter Carnival in North America was held in Montreal in January 1883. Organized by the city's business elite and Anglophone sporting clubs, the highlight of the Carnival was its ice castle, designed by Montreal architect Alexander Cowper Hutchison (1838-1922). The author outlines the background to the building of this ice structure.
