From Apocalypse to Black Mountain: the Contexts [sic] Layton's Early Criticism
|
Abstract |
The author examines Montreal poet Irving Layton's (1912-2006) criticisms in the contexts of prominent developments in poetry and criticism in Canada between 1945 and 1955. The author points out that Layton's criticism during this period was directly provoked by the controversies between the Montreal "little magazines" First Statement and Preview in the 1940s, then between Montreal's Contact Press and the Toronto based "mythopoeic" poets in the early 1950s.
