Title
Early Railway Suburbs and Their Links to Contemporary Transit-Oriented Developments
Abstract
Since the 1990s, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has emerged as a promising and influential planning concept throughout North America. It tries to ensure a more sustainable development by integrating land use and transport systems. The author points out that the origins of TOD predate its current usage and points to the development of the Town of Mount Royal, a Montreal suburb, as an early example of this landscape theory. The Town of Mount Royal was created on the initiative of the Canadian Northern Railway, which wanted to build a "model city" on the north side of Mount Royal. It was Frederick Gage Todd (1876–1948), considered Canada's first landscape architect, who finally developed the plans. The Town was officially incorporated on December 21, 1912.
