Abstract |
The author concludes that since nothing has fundamentally changed in the demographic behavior of English-speaking Quebecers, the erosion trend of both the size and the relative weight of this group continues within the province. He notes that Anglophones continue to show a strong under-fertility and a strong propensity for emigration to the rest of Canada, while benefiting only very little from international immigration, and while realizing only relatively minor gains on the side of language transfers. The author predicts (circa 1990) that the decline in the relative weight of the Anglophone population is and will remain significant on the Island of Montreal, but will stabilize in the other regions. The author also notes the same decline dynamics for Francophones in Quebec as for Anglophones in the province, although Francophones will remain in the majority on both the Island of Montreal (85 percent) and in the rest of the province (94 percent). He predicts an increase of the Allophone population on the Island of Montreal.
