‘Labouring in a Great Cause’: Marcus Child as Pioneer School Inspector in Lower Canada’s Eastern Townships, 1852-59

Abstract |
Marcus Child (1792-1859) was a former member of the Lower Canada Legislative Assembly when he was appointed school inspector for the St. Francis district in 1852. Child’s territory included over two hundred elementary schools and seven colleges and academies. The author argues that Child applied liberalism and paternalism to his job in ways similar to heading a family. He opposed compulsory taxes for schools, acted as justice of the peace and led school building initiatives in the mid-1850s.
