H. Mabel May (1877-1971), the Montreal Years: 1909-1938
|
| Abstract |
An examination of the work produced by Montreal painter Henrietta Mabel May (1877-1971) from 1909 until 1938, and the context within which her art developed. May was among a small number of Canadian women artists of the early decades of the twentieth century whose non-traditional commitment to their craft transcended academic principles, winning critical respect and contributing to the emergence of a Canadian modernism. The author points out that the work that May produced during the years under examination affords us a compelling review of the appropriation of new pictorial vocabularies in Montreal.
