Abstract |
The author elobrates on the story of Elmer Cushing, discussed in Part I, who immigrated to Montreal in the1790s and opened the American Coffee House. Cushing was befriended by David McLane, a merchant from Providence, R.I., who was accused of working for the French to overthrow the British in Lower Canada. The author outlines the events that led to the arrest, trial and hanging of McLane on July 21, 1797, and the role played by Elmer Cushing and others in denouncing McLane.
