Abstract |
The author, a descendent of Patrick Kavanagh who survived the sinking of the Carrick, a coffin-ship carrying Irish immigrants escaping the famine in their country, only to sink off the coast of Gaspé on April 28, 1847. Eighty-seven people died in the shipwreck and forty-eight survived. Patrick Kavanagh, his wife Sarah and son Martin survived. His five daughters drowned.
