Vie culturelle et pouvoirs publics locaux. La fondation de la bibliothèque municipale de Montréal
|
Abstract |
The author analyzes some of the circumstances that provoked municipal intervention in the cultural field at the beginning of the twentieth century. It will also describe the various steps that led to the foundation of the Montreal Municipal Library. At that time, the erection of a public library gave rise to sharp tensions within Montreal society. Two critical issues formed the core of the dispute: the first related to the very definition of public culture, and the second to the cultural mandate of municipal authorities. Includes information of how the city’s Anglophone leaders viewed the erection of a public library in the city.
