Abstract |
William Miller (1782-1849), an American Baptist preacher, proclaimed that the end of the world and the second coming of Christ would happen around 1844. His movement, known as Millerism, swept through the Eastern Townships, especially the townships of Stanstead and Hatley, where many Baptists and Methodists members left their churches to join the movement. Following the "Great Disappointment" when the world did not end, many of the Millerites joined the Adventist movement.
