|
| Abstract |
A study of the paintings of women and children during the inter-war years by three Montreal artists: Prudence Heward (1896-1947), Lilias Torrance Newton (1896-1980) and Jori Smith (1907-2005). The author examines the development of "pictorial modernity" in Canadian painting, and especially how these three artists used the naked female form to question the representation of women in society.
