Le lancement du festival littéraire Metropolis bleu : enjeux liés à la création d’un OBNL culturel à Montréal

Abstract |
The authors note that in the late 1990s, many English-speaking writers in Montreal considered themselves to be ‘writers without a country’ since they were neither accepted as Quebec writers by the French-speaking community nor as English writers by Canada’s English-speaking literary community, which was mainly based in the Toronto area. They explain that in response to the status of the ‘orphaned English-speaking artist,’ Linda Leith created the Write to Write evening in 1996. Inspired by the success of this event, she tried, unsuccessfully this time, to launch a new literary magazine. Spurred on by this failure, Leith tried to rally Montreal’s literary community around a new multicultural festival but was quickly rebuffed by the French-speaking writers’ union, UNEQ. Forced to work alone, she finally launched the festival's first edition in 1999.The authors’ case study adopts Linda Leith’s point of view as she attempted to set up the festival and faced unexpected reactions from key stakeholders
