Abstract |
Includes information on nineteenth-century English Quebec spots clubs, and the role that English Quebecers played in introducing organized sports to Canada. The authors point out that at the end of the nineteenth century, there were twelve Pan-Canadian and Anglophone sports associations in Quebec (lacrosse, shooting, rowing, rugby, cycling, tennis, hockey, skating, croquet, golf, bowling and canoeing). Francophones were primarily interested in horse racing, and at the end of the century only had one sports association (l'Association athlétique d'amateurs, Le National, formed in 1894 and transformed into the Palestre nationale in 1919). The Franco Catholic church, on the other hand, established charitable and educational networks to sway Francophone youths away from Anglo-Protestant and materialistic influences, including sports.
