Abstract |
The author examines the emergence and evolution of apartment buildings in Montreal between 1880 and 1914, within a territory extending from rue Notre-Dame in the south to boulevard ÉdouardMontpetit and avenue Van Horne to the north and boulevard Cavendish west to Papineau Avenue to the east. The author found 218 apartment buildings during this period in this part of Montreal. Looking at the occupants of a representative twenty-five apartment buildings for a control year - 1911 -, the author found that most were occupied by upper middle class, English-speaking Protestants, with 2.61 individuals per household, mainly composed of marital and family nuclei whose members were between 20 and 45 years of age.
