| Abstract |
The author examines the intellectual roots of the drive for unilingualism in Quebec in the mid-twentieth century, the idea that justified the language laws in the province. The author explores the way in which intellectuals in Quebec understood, wrote and debated the concept of "language" from 1957 to 1977, and how "unilingualism" emerged among these Francophone writers, poets, linguists and journalists as the key to developing the Québécois identity.
