Le personnel politique de Montréal, 1880-1914 : évolution d’une élite municipale
|
Abstract |
Between 1880 and 1914, 234 men were elected to Montreal City Council as aldermen, mayors or commissioners. This study highlights some of the characteristics of this political elite. During the period under review, Francophones were gaining in numerical strength, while Anglophones, especially the Irish, were in a pronounced decline. Throughout this period, businessmen were in the majority among both Francophones and Anglophones. At least a quarter of the group was actively involved in provincial or federal politics.
