School Reform and Community Control in the 1840s: A Case Study from the Eastern Townships
|
Abstract |
School reforms in 1840s Canada East required compromise to accommodate strong localist traditions of the Eastern Townships. The author studies seven schools in St. Armand East parish in the southwest corner of the Eastern Townships to demonstrate local inhabitants’ strong lingering American traditions. Levying local taxes for schools was a hotly contested issue throughout the 1840s, with many prominent citizens opposing school taxes because they diminished the role of affluent individuals over education.
