Abstract |
A study of Winslow Township during the second half of the nineteenth century. This Eastern Township in 1861 had a population of about 1,600 inhabitants, mainly Gaelic-speaking Scottish crofters from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides and French-Canadian habitants from south of Quebec City. The Scots lived in the southern half of Winslow Township and the French Canadians in the northern part of the township. The author investigates many aspects of the settler experience, from demography to local politics and from household economics to religious revivals.
