| Abstract |
The British-born Felton and his extended family arrived in the Eastern Townships in 1816. By 1829, the family had been granted over forty square miles of land in the townships of Ascot and Orford, an area predominately settled by American-born immigrants. In 1822, Fenton was appointed to Lower Canada’s Legislative Council. He was a firm believer that the Council should remain an appointed body in order to represent the interests of the Church of England, English-speaking merchants and British immigration.
