‘In the desert places of the wilderness’: The Frontier Thesis and the Anglican Church in the Eastern Townships, 1799-1831
|
Abstract |
The author's case study of two Eastern Townships neighbouring parishes, one in St. Armand near the Bay of Missisquoi close to the Vermont border and the other in Dunham Township, and how the British-born Anglican missionaries of this area, starting in 1804, adapted to the challenges posed by an alien cultural environment. The area had been settled by American Loyalists, and American missionary societies and revivalist sects also took an interest in this region in the 1830s and 1840s.
