Abstract |
According to the Department of National Defence, the Sherbrooke Regiment dates back to 1866. The Sherbrooke Hussars originated in Melbourne, Quebec on September 21, 1866, when the Sherbrooke Battalion of Infantry was authorized to be formed. It was redesignated the '53rd Sherbrooke Battalion of Infantry' on March 15, 1867. On March 22, 1867, it was reorganized as two separate battalions designated the '53rd Melbourne Battalion of Infantry' and the '54th Sherbrooke Battalion of Infantry'. It was redesignated the '53rd Sherbrooke Battalion of Infantry' on May 10, 1867; the '53rd Sherbrooke Regiment' on May 8, 1900; 'The Sherbrooke Regiment' on March 29, 1920; 'The Sherbrooke Regiment (MG)' on December 15, 1936; 'The Sherbrooke Regiment' on February 1, 1941; '2nd (Reserve) Battalion, The Sherbrooke Regiment' on November 7, 1940; the '12th Armoured Regiment (Sherbrooke Regiment), RCAC' on April 1, 1946; 'The Sherbrooke Regiment (12th Armoured Regiment)' on February 4, 1949; and 'The Sherbrooke Regiment (RCAC)' on May 19, 1958. On February 15, 1965, it was amalgamated with the '7th/11th Hussars' and redesignated 'The Sherbrooke Hussars'.
