Abstract |
The British-born John Ostell (1813-1892)emigrated to Montreal in 1834 at the age of 21 and was the city's most important architect in the years 1836 to 1859. According to the author, he changed the face of the city with his design of some 25 major religious, civic and industrial buildings, as well as his extensive surveying activities. He was also strong supporter of the Montreal Mechanic's Institution and its successor, the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal.
