| Abstract |
An examination of four population crises between 1909 and 1968 at The Boys' Farm and Training School, a reform school in Shawbridge, Quebec, founded in 1908 by Montreal philanthropic businessmen to reform Protestant delinquent boys in a non-prison setting through outdoor work and living. In describing the first population crisis from 1921 to 1930, the author focuses on the strategies adopted by the Boys' Farm's influential English-speaking Board of Directors. In describing the three later population crises, the author focuses on the struggle between the Boys' Farm and the Montreal Social Welfare Court over the commitment of older boys and emotionally disturbed boys. The Boys' Farm is today known as Shawbridge Youth Centres, part of Batshaw Youth and Family Services.
