Abstract |
The author found that the total number of Jewish children attending the Protestant schools of Greater Montreal, including those of St. Martin (Chomedey) increased from seventy-seven in 1877 to a peak of 14,134 in 1924, decreased to a low of 8,590 in 1942, and increased to a peak of 18,468 in 1964, of which 17,321 attended the schools of the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, and 1,147 attended the schools of the Protestant School Board of St. Martin. In addition about 4,000 Jewish children in Greater Montreal received their secular and Jewish education in 1964 in various types of Jewish community day schools and Congregation day schools. In 1924 Jewish children formed the majority in eleven of the sixty-six Protestant schools in Montreal and all of them were in the old area of Jewish settlement between Hutchison and St. Denis Street. In six of these eleven Protestant schools in the old area of Jewish settlement, Jewish children formed more than ninety percent of the total enrolment for eight to thirty-one years during the period from 1924 to 1958. In 1964 Jewish children formed the majority in twenty-three out of 105 Protestant schools in Greater Montreal, and of these Protestant schools in which Jewish children formed the majority only one, Baron Byng High School with 58.1 percent of its enrolment Jewish, was in the old area of Jewish settlement and the other twenty-two Protestant schools were in the newer suburban areas west of Hutchison Street.
