Abstract |
The author points out that the area of Montreal that is today known as Chinatown was earlier occupied by another immigrant group to the city. The area was first settled by Irish immigrants who arrived in the 1830s and 1840s. The area around Cheneville Street, between Bleury and Saint-Urbain, was then called Little Dublin. In the mid-nineteenth century, the first Chinese arrived in Montreal and, in 1877, they set up their businesses near the present-day Chinatown, on Craig Street (now Saint Antoine) and Bleury. By the end of the nineteenth century, Chinese businesses, clubs, associations and residences were focusing on La Gauchetière, between Jeanne-Mance Street and Saint-Laurent Boulevard, in what is now known as Chinatown.
