La question de la taxe scolaire à Montréal au XIXe siècle (1870-1903) : un nouveau regard sur l'intégration sociale des Juifs

Abstract |
In 1903 the Legislative Assembly of Quebec adopted a law recognizing the integration of Jewish students in Montreal Protestant schools. Historians have traditionally interpreted the adoption of this law as a result of religious antipathy practiced by the province's French Catholic elite towards Jewish immigrants. However, the author argues that his research analyzing newspaper editorials, school board archives, and the archives of the Canadian Jewish Congress leads him to the conclusion that the question of how the education tax was shared (and closely linked to the education of Jewish children) played a crucial role in Jewish children's integration into Protestant schools.
