Le rapport à l’Islam des musulmanes Shi’ites libanaises à Montréal

Abstract |
Based on a survey that combined observations with qualitative interviews conducted with some Lebanese Shiites women living in Montreal, the author attempts to show the existence of a multiplicity in the ways of proclaiming and living as a Muslim. The author contends that the relationship of migrant women to Islam does not follow a single model since they do not follow ritual prescriptions uniformly. Furthermore, she contends, the strong religiosity observed in several of the women, as well as the generalized feeling of belonging to Islam, does not correspond either to a return of the religious, or to an "awakening" or "withdrawal of identity", but rather the maintenance of religious identity.
