Abstract |
A study of canal and railway labourers on Canada's nineteenth-century public works projects. Over the forty-year period covered by the dissertation, the composition of the workforce changed from being predominately Irish navvies to increasingly ethnically heterogeneous labourers. The author includes information on working and living conditions, and strikes, especially the Lachine Canal strike of 1877.
