The Irish-born McLaughlin (1826-1914) was the author/editor of The Photographic Portfolio, A Monthly View of Canadian Scenes and Scenery. From the 1840s to 1860 he lived in Quebec City, before moving to Ottawa to work for the Commissioner of Public Works.
