| Abstract |
The Irish-born Dr. Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan (1797-1880) was Louis-Joseph Papineau's principal English-speaking lieutenant in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada between 1834 and 1837. Through his newspaper, the Vindicator, O'Callaghan tried, with only moderate success, to rouse Montreal Irish Catholic support for the cause of political reform and the Parti Patriote. O'Callaghan fled to the United States with Papineau soon after the Rebellion of 1837 broke out, both fearing they would be charged with treason if they remained in Lower Canada. O'Callaghan eventually established himself in a new career as the State Archivist of New York, where he lived out the rest of his life.
