Abstract |
A study of the financial plight of newspapers in pre-Confederation Canada, especially those in Canada East, and an outline of editorial squabbling over the commonly accepted practice of newspaper patronage by political parties. The author examines the financial difficulties of the following Montreal papers: The Witness, The True Witness and Catholic Chronicle, The Gazette, the Pilot, and the Montreal Herald. The author also examines the financial plight of several Toronto newspapers.
