| Abstract |
Stephen Burroughs (1765-1840) was one of the best known criminal figures in New England in at the turn of the nineteenth century. A counterfeiter and school teacher, library founder and horse thief, a preacher's son and an escaped convict, Burroughs fled to Trois-Rivières in 1833 where he converted to Roman Catholicism and retired to a life of teaching. He died in Trois-Rivières in 1840.
