Irish-Canadian Intercultural Relations in Quebec: An Historical Overview
|
Abstract |
The author outlines the history of Irish immigration to and settlement in Quebec from the seventeenth to the twentieth century and examines the cultural, religious, and linguistic identities that they and other ethnic English-speaking communities in the province have with French Quebec. He examines the key points of Irish-Quebec history, starting with those who arrived before the Conquest of 1760, the attitude of the Irish towards the Rebellion of 1837, the Great Famine in Ireland of 1847 that led to thousands of Irish immigrating to the province, and the ongoing tensions between French and Irish-descendant English speakers in present-day Montreal. The author contends that his study is to provide a historical background to the current tense relationship between French- and English-speakers in Quebec, while pointing to the promise of a positive relationship in the future.
