The Montreal Militia as a Social Institution Before World War I
|
| Abstract |
An examination of the role and function of Montreal’s five most prominent pre-World War I militia units – the 5th Royal Scots, the Victoria Rifles, the Prince of Wales Fusiliers, the Royal Canadian Hussars and the Caravinier Mount-Royal. The author concludes that the militia was both a social institution and a socializing institution, facilitating the social adaptation of young, single men to middle class, Montreal urban life.
