John William Dawson (1820-1899), a renowned but controversial scientist, was appointed Principal of McGill University in 1855. He was the first Canadian-born scientist of worldwide reputation, and the leading anti-Darwinist of the late Victorian period. The author explores the tensions between Dawson’s involvement in local academic affairs and his desire for international recognition by his scientific peers.
