Abstract |
A reprint of a series of letters originally published in the Montreal Herald by the Scottish-born Adam Thom (1802-1890), who at the time was the editor of the newspaper. Thom opposed the anti-commercial and pro-democratic tendencies of the French Canadian leaders, and the British government's policy of "conciliation" towards them. Using the pen-name Camillus, Thom's "Anti-Gallic" letters, begun on October 1, 1835, were prompted as much by Thom's fears of Lord Gosford's pro-French-Canadian sentiments as by Thom's desire to inform the British public once again of the lamentable state of affairs in Lower Canada. Thom prophesied violent retribution if any harm should come to English-speaking farmers living on the seigneuries.
