Material Relating to Quebec in the Gage and Amherst Papers
|
Abstract |
A description of letters and documents written by or to Thomas Gage (1719 or 1720-1787), military governor of Montreal from 1760 to 1763 and Commander-in-Chief of North America until 1775. The letters, now stored at the William L. Clements Library (University of Michigan), reveal something of the social and political conditions of Quebec during the late-eighteenth century. The documents reveal details of the feud between the English-speaking merchants of Montreal and the soldiery of that garrison.
