| Abstract |
Little know and forgotten facts about the Eastern Townships-born George Harold Baker (1877-1916), known to his family and friends as Harry Baker. He is best remembered as the only Canadian parliamentarian killed in action in a war. The author briefly outlines Baker's political career as a Conservative member of Parliament, including the enmity between Baker and Sydney Fisher, the Liberal MP for Brome County, whom Baker defeated in the 1911 general election. The author points out that Fisher's influence (even after his death in 1921) was such that Baker's name was not listed on the 1923 monument to the "Brome boys" who died in action in the First World War. Likewise, when the 1924 statue to Baker was inaugurated on Parliament Hill by Liberal Prime Minister Mackenzie King, Baker's name was barely mentioned during the ceremony.
